World Cancer Day: Ovie Brume Foundation urges Nigerians to take precaution against Cancer

In a bid to celebrate the World Cancer Day, Ovie Brume Foundation has urged Nigerians to take safety precaution against the fast killing disease, Cancer.

This statement was made at an event held in Tarkwa Bay, Lagos state to commemorate World Cancer Day.
According to the Executive Director, Ovie Brume Foundation, Mrs Adeola Awogbemi stated that it has become necessary to create effective awareness on the causes of cancer in Nigeria.
“Tarkwa Bay Island was specifically chosen due to result of the survey conducted much earlier on literacy
“We realised that most of the residents here have no understanding of lots of things, most especially their health.
“We are now in Tarkwa Bay to create awareness on cancer. More so, we brought experts to empower them on what to do when faced with the challenge whenever it surface”, Awogbemi said.

Speaking on medication for cancer patients, Awogbemi noted that the foundation is in collaboration with Georgekerry Foundation, Lagoon Hospital and other institutions to provide free cancer treatments.

“We are not just going to abandon patients diagnosed with cancer because we created the awareness and ensure the screening took place.

“We’ll take the step further by providing funding for them and linking them up with expert institutions giving free cancer treatment.
“The awareness is not only for the married men and women but also for the younger children. They must also be aware.
“Ovie Brume Foundation is here to create awareness on early detection.
With early detection,Cancer can be treated.
“Cancer is preventable”, she explained.

Speaking further, the Consultant Family Physician, Lagoon Hospitals, Dr Oluwagbemiga Durojaiye stated that cancer is the second leading cause of death all over the world.
According to him, 17 people die every seconds from cancer all over the world.
“Research revealed that 70, 327 people die from cancer in Nigeria in the year 2018.
“Much worst, for every 5 people infected with cancer in Nigeria, 4 dies due to lack of facilities and negligence on part of the people”, he said.
Durojaiye however warns smokers to desist from smoking because there are 7000 chemicals present in a stick of cigarette. 250 of which are harmful and another 50 causes cancer.
“Tobacco cigarette is a perfect example for causes of cancer”

He therefore encourage patients and people to start eating more fruits and vegetable.
“To treat cancer is very expensive all over the world, so it is much better to prevent it”, Durojaiye reminded.
However, several villagers appreciated the effort of Ovie Brume Foundation on cancer sensitization.

Speaking with BusinessRemarks,a village, Mr Babatunde Taylor said, “this is the first of its kind in this community, and we will love it to continue”.

In addition, Mrs Patience Timi and Boss Thomas also posited that the screening, test and doctor’s advice are on point.
