Nigerian telecommunications company 9mobile commemorated Stop Cyberbullying Day 2024 by hosting an insightful online session titled “Cyberbullying vs Free Speech: The Reality, The Difference, and Our Responsibility.”

The event, held on X Space, brought together a diverse panel of experts from media, mental health, and legal backgrounds. These experts provided valuable insights and answered questions from the audience, fostering a deeper understanding of cyberbullying.

The session explored the complexities surrounding online behavior, particularly the fine line between free speech and cyberbullying. Participants delved into the true nature of cyberbullying, its impact on individuals and communities, and how to differentiate it from the healthy exercise of free speech.

The event underscored the shared responsibility of individuals, corporations, and society at large in creating a safe online environment for everyone.

The expert panel included a talented musician and radio personality, Nikki Laoye; Precious Richard-Okon, a plus-size lifestyle and dance content creator; legal expert Alice Okoro, Manager, Legal Services for 9mobile; and Amara Ruth Esomchi, a certified health worker and therapist.

Laoye spoke about the importance of holding online bullies accountable while respecting the right to free speech. “I’ve experienced cyberbullying firsthand,” she said. “But I’ve learned how to handle these situations. While people are free to express their opinions, I know when to put a stop to insults and bullies.”

Legal expert Alice Okoro clarified the misconception that free speech justifies cyberbullying. “The Nigerian constitution grants us the right to free speech, but it’s not absolute,” she explained. “Every right has limitations. Free speech doesn’t allow you to infringe on the law or the Constitution.”

Okoro further highlighted the Cyber Crimes Act of 2015, which tackles cyberbullying and online harassment. Offenders can face imprisonment, fines, or both, with repeat offenders receiving harsher penalties.

Precious Richard-Okon, a plus-size content creator, shared her personal experiences navigating the online space and offered valuable tips for others.
