SIM Replacement Policy: FG Eases Burden for Telecoms Subscribers

As part of an effort to ensure an expedited linkage of all SIM Registration Records with National Identification Numbers (NINs), the Federal Government has approved a SIM Replacement Policy.

According to the Government, the SIM Replacement Policy would provides a seamless recovery platform for subscribers whose SIMs have been lost, stolen, misplaced or damaged to re-establish access to telecom services.

This was made available to Business Remarks in a statement jointly signed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC’s) Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Ikechukwu Adinde and Head of Corporate Communication, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mr Kayode Adegoke.

Based on recommendations of the Technical Committee set up under the Chairmanship of the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, such subscribers are subjected to the certain guidelines.

According to the policy, the subscriber is advised to present a NIN after which an effective verification of the NIN is carried out by NIMC.

The policy also stipulated that the relevant guidelines and regulations of NCC concerning SIM Replacement are fully adhered to.

Charged with the operationalization of the process to ensure ensure the process is carried out as seamlessly as possible the Technical Committee is made up of representatives from NCC, NIMC, Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).

The Government, however appreciated Nigerians for the understanding and commitment demonstrated towards ensuring the overall success of this exercise.
