NITDA Warns of Critical WordPress Vulnerability Affecting Millions of Websites

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has issued a warning about a severe security vulnerability affecting the LiteSpeed Cache plugin for WordPress.

The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2024-28000, poses a significant threat to millions of websites worldwide. The severe security vulnerability has been discovered in the LiteSpeed Cache plugin for WordPress, putting millions of websites at risk. This vulnerability, identified as CVE-2024-28000, allows attackers to gain complete control of a website without requiring any authentication.

The vulnerability stems from a flaw in the plugin’s “role simulation” feature. By exploiting this flaw, attackers can manipulate the plugin to gain administrative access to the website. This could lead to the installation of malicious plugins, theft of sensitive data, or even the redirection of website visitors to harmful websites.

The simplicity of the attack vector makes it particularly concerning. Attackers can easily exploit the vulnerability by guessing or brute-forcing passwords or by exploiting exposed debug logs. This ease of exploitation poses a significant threat to websites using the LiteSpeed Cache plugin.

To mitigate the risk, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has strongly advised website administrators using the LiteSpeed Cache plugin to update to the latest version (6.4.1) immediately. Updating the plugin will patch the vulnerability and prevent attackers from exploiting it.

As a precautionary measure, administrators should also ensure that debugging is disabled on their live websites. Debugging is a feature that can provide valuable information for troubleshooting but can also be exploited by attackers. By disabling debugging, administrators can reduce the risk of the vulnerability being exploited.

Additionally, administrators should regularly audit their plugin settings to identify and address any potential vulnerabilities. This includes reviewing the plugin’s permissions and ensuring that only necessary features are enabled.

The NITDA has emphasized the importance of taking these preventive measures to protect websites from the serious consequences of this vulnerability. By updating the plugin, disabling debugging, and regularly auditing plugin settings, website administrators can significantly reduce the risk of a successful attack.

The NITDA has also provided contact information for its Computer Emergency Response Team (CERRT) for further inquiries. Website administrators can reach out to CERRT for assistance and guidance related to this vulnerability.
