…Subscribers Enjoy 17.82 Mbps Average Download Speed
MTN Nigeria has emerged as the undisputed leader in mobile internet performance for 2024, according to a comprehensive report released by nPerf, an independent telecom network optimization company based in France.
The report, which analyzed data from January 1 to December 31, 2024, revealed that MTN outperformed its competitors in all key metrics, including download speed, upload speed, latency, and video streaming.
The nPerf study employs a rigorous methodology, utilizing a free application that allows users to conduct internet quality tests on their mobile, fixed, or Wi-Fi connections. This crowdsourced data, encompassing over 300,000 tests daily and covering 26 million devices globally, provides a comprehensive view of network performance. Statistical precision is prioritized to accurately determine winners, with data analysis focusing on key performance indicators (KPIs) relevant to user experience. The analysis also specifically examines performance during peak hours (6 PM to 11 PM) and throughout the day, providing a holistic understanding of network capabilities.
According to the report, MTN’s subscribers enjoyed an average download speed of 17.82 Mbps, significantly higher than the 9.98 Mbps recorded by Airtel, the second-place finisher. Glo trailed far behind with an average download speed of 5.66 Mbps. MTN also excelled in upload speed, latency, and video streaming, solidifying its position as the undisputed leader in mobile internet performance.
MTN’s mobile internet performance is particularly noteworthy in download speed, achieving a remarkable lead over its competitors. This superior download speed translates to faster file downloads, smoother app usage, and an overall improved online experience for MTN subscribers. Furthermore, MTN also demonstrated excellence in upload speed, crucial for sharing content, video calls, and other interactive online activities.
“For the period analyzed, MTN stands out as the market leader, achieving a notable performance score. Not only does MTN excel in download speed, upload speed, and latency, but it also leads in video streaming. MTN dominates the 4G focus area, reinforcing its pioneering position in the mobile technology sector. Significant improvements include a remarkable enhancement in upload speed. MTN’s consistent contributions have greatly strengthened the overall market landscape,” the report stated.
The report also highlighted MTN’s strong performance in browsing and video streaming quality. The “Quality of Experience” metrics for both browsing and streaming show MTN consistently outperforming other providers.
Specifically, MTN subscribers enjoyed the best mobile internet browsing performance in 2024, achieving an average browsing performance rate of 84.11%. This indicates that MTN Nigeria users experience smoother web browsing with faster page loading times. The telecom subscribers also enjoyed the best mobile internet streaming performance in 2024, with a high streaming performance rate of 87.29%.
Furthermore, MTN’s subscribers enjoyed the best average mobile internet latency speed with an average latency of 29.66 ms. This low latency is crucial for real-time applications like online gaming and video conferencing.
In addition, the report highlighted MTN’s consistent performance across all metrics, demonstrating its commitment to providing reliable and high-quality mobile internet services to its subscribers. MTN’s superior infrastructure and network resilience were credited for its exceptional performance, particularly in terms of latency, which is crucial for seamless video streaming and online gaming.
MTN’s dominance in the mobile internet market is further reinforced by its impressive performance in the 4G focus area. With a significant lead in 4G coverage and download speeds, MTN has established itself as the pioneer in mobile technology in Nigeria.
In the 4G focus area, MTN emerged as the leader with the best 4G internet performance in 2024. This includes:
- Best 4G download performance: MTN
- Best 4G upload performance: MTN
- Best 4G latency performance: MTN

Recall, Business Remarks reported MTN Nigeria subscribers are now consuming a significant amount of data than ever before, with average monthly data usage jumping 31.2% to 11.3GB. According to the telco’s financial report released for the third quarter, Q3 2024, MTN Nigeria reported a surge of 42.1% in its data traffic while active data users increased by 5.1% to 45.3 million, highlighting continued demand for data services.
In its mission to continue expanding its network coverage and investing in new network technologies while bridging the broadband coverage divide to remain competitive, MTN Nigeria noted last year that, the European Investment Bank’s (EIB) 100 million euros ($99.95 million) will be invested to support the company’s telecommunication network expansion.
