MTN, Huawei Forge Alliance to Drive Africa’s Digital Future

In a move aimed at accelerating Africa’s digital transformation, MTN Group and Huawei have solidified their long-standing partnership with the signing of a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at MWC Barcelona 2025. The agreement, announced on the final day of the global mobile technology showcase, outlines a collaborative framework focused on advanced connectivity, cloud technologies, and digital infrastructure development across the continent.

The MoU signals a renewed commitment from both entities to explore innovative solutions designed to bridge the digital divide and foster sustainable digital economic growth in Africa.

Mazen Mroué, Group Chief Technology and Information Officer of MTN, highlighted the company’s dedication to delivering “seamless, intelligent, and inclusive digital experiences.” He emphasised that the collaboration with Huawei would focus on “exploring innovative solutions to enhance network reliability, improve service quality, and expand digital access for underserved communities.” Mroué further stated that by leveraging advanced connectivity and cloud technologies, MTN aims to “empower businesses, enrich customer experiences, and accelerate Africa’s digital future.”

Li Peng, Huawei’s Corporate Senior Vice President and President of ICT Sales & Service, underscored the transformative potential of the partnership. He stated that “our joint initiatives in 5G-Advanced networks and AI-powered cloud platforms will create a robust foundation for Africa’s digital economy.” Li Peng also emphasised Huawei’s commitment to “developing localised solutions that bridge both technological and skills gaps across the continent.”

The MoU signing ceremony, held during MWC Barcelona 2025, which ran from March 3rd to 6th, marks a significant step forward in the strategic collaboration between MTN and Huawei. Both companies have pledged to explore cutting-edge solutions to drive long-term digital economic growth in Africa.

Huawei, which showcased its latest products and solutions at stand 1H50 in Fira Gran Via Hall 1 during the event, reiterated its commitment to working with carriers and partners worldwide to accelerate the transition towards an intelligent world, particularly with the anticipated acceleration of commercial 5G-Advanced deployment and the integration of AI in carrier operations in 2025.
