Microsoft Nigeria Realignment: Roles Impacted, Office Remains Open – Presidency

…Company Streamlines Nigeria Operations

The Presidency has clarified recent reports regarding Microsoft’s operations in Nigeria. While there is a company restructure underway, Microsoft is not shutting down its Nigerian office.

Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, confirmed a company-wide realignment impacting “few roles” within Microsoft Nigeria. This clarification follows media reports suggesting a complete shutdown of Microsoft’s Africa Development Centre (ADC) in Lagos, potentially affecting hundreds of jobs.

A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the realignment to Techpoint Africa, specifically mentioning the engineering team at the Lagos ADC. While the spokesperson did not disclose the exact number of impacted employees, Ajayi stated it is “less than 30.”

Microsoft’s Approach to Realignment

According to Ajayi, affected employees will be offered the opportunity to apply for new roles within Microsoft Nigeria. This approach aligns with the company’s standard practices for internal reshuffles. Those unable to secure new roles or seeking opportunities outside Microsoft will be offered support in their job search.

Addressing Exaggerated Reports

Ajayi specifically addressed claims by Peter Obi, a Nigerian presidential candidate, who reportedly described the situation as an “earthquake.” The statement from the Presidency emphasizes the limited scope of the realignment, highlighting that the Microsoft office in Nigeria remains operational.
