Market Share: MTN Ranks High, Records 64.4 Million Internet Subscribers in Q3 2020

…As Active Voice Subscribers Hits 82.64 Million

As Nigerian Telecommunications Industry continued to record increased in its subscribers base for both Internet and voice subscription, MTN Nigeria has topped the chart for the third quarter (Q3) of the year 2020.

Data obtained by Business Remarks from the latest report released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) disclosed that the number of Internet subscribers in the country grew to 151.51 million subscribers in Q3 2020.

Further breakdown revealed that the total number of internet subscribers increased by 7.87 million (5.48%) in Q3 2020 from 143.6 million recorded in the previous quarter to 151.5 million subscribers.

Similarly, it increased by 28.3 million (23%) as against 123 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2019 (Q3 2019).

According to NBS report on telecoms data, MTN Nigeria internet subscribers grew by 3.75 million from 60.60 million recorded in Q2 2020 to 64.35 million subscribers gotten for Q3 2020, an increase of 6.18% QoQ.

Also, the telco company recorded an increase of 12.7 million interenet subscribers when compared with 51.7 million gotten as at Q3 2019, an increase of 24.53% YoY.

The statistics also revealed that as at Q3 2020, MTN held the highest internet market share with 42% (64.35 million) while Airtel followed with a market share of 27% (40.31 million), Globacom followed closely with a market share of 26% (39.13 million), while 9mobile recorded a market share of 5% (7.3 million).

However, the four major networks recorded positive growths in the number of active internet subscribers when compared to Q2 2020.

On active voice subscribers, more data by the NBS stated that telecoms data for Q2 and Q3 2020 reflected that a total of 196,242,456 and 205,252,058 subscribers were active on voice as against 189,282,796 in Q1 2020.

This represented a 4.59% increase in voice subscriptions QoQ.

For the period under study, MTN Nigeria has the highest number of voice subscribers too.

In Q3 2020, NBS place the number of MTN’s active subscribers at 82.64 million, an increase of 3.9million from 78.76 million recorded for Q2 2020, representing an increase of 4.93% QoQ.

While in a year, MTN Nigeria active voice subscribers increased by 17.31 million when comapered with 65.33million recorded in Q3 2019, representing an increase of 26.49% in YoY.
