Main one calls for review of ICT Curriculum

A broadband infrastructure services  provider with open access submarine cable system , Main One has called on the government to review the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) curriculum in Nigeria.
This assertion was made by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the company, Ms. Funke Opeke at the Africa Digital Awards ADA held in Lagos during a presentation titled “How do we deliver high quality broadband coverage to everyone”.
Speaking during the session, Opeke who was represented by the Communication Manager, Main One, Mr Temitope Osunrinde said the need to review ICT curriculum has called for urgency.
According to her, most of what is taught in the curriculum is not relevant with the reality of what is happening in the ICT industry today.
Opeke however noted that most software application developed locally are made by startups who do not learn it from schools.
“There are lot more going on in ICT around the world. The gaps between Nigerian graduates and kids from other part of the world knowledge on ICT is huge.
“If Nigeria is going to catch up and compete meaningfully, ICT curriculum have to be reviewed.
Speaking further she emphasized that businesses also need to focus on the development of local content.
In addition, Opeke posited that indigenous hosting of content and cluster ecosystem should be encouraged.
The requirements for the delivery of high quality broadband coverage for everyone according to Opeke includes infrastructure with access for all, harmonised taxes and RoW coupled with the conclusion of Infraco licenses for all regions.
“Broadband infrastructure investment is a long term investment”, she stated.
