Lagos Strengthens Digital Defences with Cybersecurity Project, Pushes for State Innovation Bill

In a bid to fortify its technological landscape, the Lagos State government recently unveiled a cybersecurity project designed to shield its digital infrastructure from cyberattacks, which are becoming increasingly prevalent.

This disclosure was made by the Lagos State Commissioner for Science, Innovation and Technology, Mr. Olatunbosun Alake during the 2024 ministerial press briefing in Lagos.

This initiative aligns with a broader strategy to enhance overall security and governance within Lagos. The cybersecurity project leverages partnerships with leading cybersecurity firms and international organizations, granting the state access to cutting-edge technologies and expertise. This collaboration will bolster its capacity to defend against sophisticated cyber threats.

A central component of the cybersecurity project is the establishment of a Cybersecurity Operations Center (CSOC). This center will function as the nerve center for real-time monitoring, detection, and response to cyber threats. Staffed by a team of cybersecurity experts and equipped with advanced technology, the CSOC aims to safeguard the state’s digital infrastructure from potential attacks.

In addition to bolstering cybersecurity, Lagos is also pushing for a State Innovation Bill. This bill, if passed, aims to create incentive packages for tech companies registered in the state. These incentives would empower them to flourish and drive technological advancement within Lagos. A stakeholder session will be held this week to discuss and co-create the bill.

The Lagos State Science Research and Innovation Council (LASRIC) plays a crucial role in driving the state’s innovation agenda. Over the past three years, LASRIC has funded over 60 tech startups and distributed over N800 million in grants to startups and universities for research and development. Notably, they have also secured a patent for an original digital solution invented at the University of Lagos.

Beyond the cybersecurity project and the Innovation Bill, Lagos is undertaking additional initiatives to cultivate a robust and secure tech ecosystem. The state has established a Cybersecurity Council comprised of experts from both the public and private sectors. This council is tasked with advising the government on strategy, policy refinement, program implementation, and training initiatives related to cybersecurity efforts.

Furthermore, Lagos has embarked on a Data Protection Compliance Project. This project involves sensitization workshops and the appointment of Data Protection Officers across various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). The project aims to safeguard the right to data privacy, promote secure data exchange practices, and ensure Nigerian businesses remain competitive in international trade.

Finally, the annual Art of Technology Lagos (AOT) conference is fostering collaboration and innovation. This conference brings together key stakeholders in the tech industry, including policymakers, government officials, venture capitalists, startups, and tech talent. The AOT conference plays a vital role in propelling Lagos towards a smarter future driven by technological advancements.
