COVID 19: Competition Tightens as Glo Gains Over 2Million Internet Users in April

As the world battles Coronavirus pandemic with companies and individuals getting familiar with working remotely, the competition to get more customers has become fierce among telecom operators in Nigeria.

With this, the Nigerian Telecommunications Company, Globacom efforts has become applaudable as it’s recorded tremendous results in gaining 2,072,369 new internet subscribers for the month of April 2019.

Recalled that, the Federal Government of Nigeria in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria declared a total lockdown in the month of April 2020.

As a result, data traffic and internet activities spur high as companies and individuals get more digitally included to stay afloat economically as well as working remotely gained more acceptance in society.

 

According to the latest statistics obtained by Business Remarks from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Glo internet subscribers for the month of April 2020 hits 35,943,825 as against 33,871,456 recorded for the month of March 2020.

The overall new internet subscribers recorded for the month under review were put by the commission at 2,510,628, thereby pushing the number of internet subscribers in Nigeria to 138,342,770 as against 135,832,142 recorded in March 2020.

Further breakdown revealed that, while MTN gained 698,593 new internet users, Airtel gained 41,791 new internet users and 9mobile losing 302,125 from its already existing internet users; Globacom gained the highest – a total number of 2,072,369.

More data disclosed that Glo has a market share of 27.22% the second-highest to MTN’s 39.20% while Airtel has 26.91% and EMTS (9mobile) with 6.60% market share.

For active subscribers for telephony services, Globacom has 51,838,290 for the period under review.
