ALTON Clarifies Telecom Tower Ownership Amidst Lagos Enumeration Exercise

As the Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA) prepares to commence its comprehensive enumeration of telecommunication masts and towers across Lagos State on February 1st, the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has stepped forward to address a common misconception regarding tower ownership.

ALTON, representing licensed telecommunications operators in Nigeria, clarified that not all telecom towers are operated by network providers. While many towers are indeed used by these operators, a significant number belong to broadcasting companies (radio and television stations), government agencies, emergency services (police, fire, and other security organizations), financial institutions, and various other entities.

“It’s a widespread misunderstanding that every mast and tower we see is directly run by a telecom operator,” explained an ALTON spokesperson. “This simply isn’t the case. Many organizations rely on these structures for their own communication needs, independent of the major telecom networks.”

This clarification comes as LASIMRA’s enumeration exercise aims to update its database with accurate and comprehensive information on all communication infrastructure within Lagos State. By accurately identifying the ownership of each tower, the exercise will enable better regulatory oversight and improved infrastructure management.

ALTON emphasized that this distinction is crucial for ensuring public safety and addressing any potential structural or environmental concerns associated with masts and towers. By identifying the responsible parties for each structure, LASIMRA can effectively enforce safety regulations and address any issues that may arise.

The association expressed its full support for LASIMRA’s initiative, recognizing the importance of accurate data collection for the safety and well-being of all residents. ALTON encouraged all stakeholders, including telecom operators, broadcasting companies, government agencies, and the general public, to cooperate fully with the enumeration teams.

“We believe this exercise is a vital step towards creating a safer and more efficient telecommunications landscape in Lagos,” the ALTON spokesperson stated. “By working together, we can ensure that all communication infrastructure is properly maintained and operated, minimizing any potential risks to the public.”

The enumeration exercise, which is expected to span three months or more, will provide valuable data that will inform future planning and development of telecommunications infrastructure in Lagos State.
