Airtel Africa Grows Customer Base to 152.7 Million in 14 Countries

…Targets 62% reduction in emissions

Airtel Africa, a leading telecommunications provider operating across 14 African countries, has released its 2024 Sustainability Report.

The report highlights a remarkable year for the company, marked by significant growth in its customer base, network expansion, and unwavering commitment to environmental and social responsibility initiatives.

Segun Ogunsanya, the outgoing Group CEO of Airtel Africa, emphasized the company’s mission that extends beyond just providing connectivity. “Our mission is much bigger,” he stated. “We aim to transform lives through connectivity, fostering digital and financial inclusion while empowering future generations.”

This vision is reflected in the impressive growth of Airtel Africa’s customer base, reaching a staggering 152.7 million individuals across its markets. This surge indicates the company’s dedication to bridging the digital divide and connecting more people across Africa.

Network infrastructure development remained a key focus area for Airtel Africa in 2023. The company achieved significant milestones by expanding its 4G network to reach a remarkable 70.7% of the population it serves. This represents a near 5% increase compared to the previous year, significantly enhancing internet access and mobile broadband capabilities across the continent.

Furthermore, Airtel Africa took a leap forward by introducing 5G services, currently reaching over 4% of its customers primarily in urban areas. This early adoption of next-generation technology positions Airtel Africa as a frontrunner in driving Africa’s digital transformation journey.

However, Airtel Africa’s commitment extends beyond simply expanding its network reach. The company prioritizes responsible data management, as evidenced by attaining the prestigious ISO certifications for data privacy and security (ISO 27001 and ISO 22301). These certifications demonstrate Airtel Africa’s adherence to the highest international standards when it comes to safeguarding customer data and ensuring user privacy.

Looking ahead, Airtel Africa’s focus on sustainability remains paramount. The company has taken a proactive approach towards reducing its environmental footprint. In May 2023, they published a comprehensive roadmap titled “Journey towards a net zero future.” This roadmap outlines a clear strategy for reducing scope 1 and 2 emissions while setting a near-term target to achieve a 62% reduction in emissions intensity compared to the March 2022 baseline. This commitment underscores Airtel Africa’s responsibility towards environmental conservation and its dedication to mitigating its impact on the planet.

Furthermore, the launch of Nxtra by Airtel, a new data center business, prioritizes energy efficiency. The construction of one of Africa’s largest data centers in Lagos, Nigeria, exemplifies this commitment. This state-of-the-art facility will incorporate modern energy-saving technologies, complementing the ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions across existing sites. This focus on sustainable data center operations positions Airtel Africa as a leader in environmentally conscious technology infrastructure development in Africa.

Airtel Africa’s 2024 Sustainability Report marks a significant milestone for the company. By expanding its reach, promoting responsible data management, and prioritizing environmental sustainability, Airtel Africa demonstrates its unwavering commitment to driving positive change and empowering millions of people across the African continent. The company’s dedication to building a robust digital ecosystem positions it as a key player in shaping a brighter future for Africa.
