Access Bank’s Boss Emerges 2021 African Banker Of the Year

The Group Managing Director/ chief executive officer, Access Bank Plc, Herbert Wigwe, has emerged African Banker of the Year at the 2021 edition of the African Banker Awards, restating his commitment to make the commercial bank, Africa’s gateway to the world.

The seasoned banker, was last year, chosen for the prestigious awards ahead other commercial banks chief executive in Nigeria, making him the winner for two consecutive years.

This year’s awards ceremony was held virtually during the Annual meetings of the African Development Bank, in line with COVID 19 protocols.

After receiving the awards, the banker said his aim is to make Access Bank the top supporter of the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement.

Wigwe said “We want to be seen as the best bank supporting the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement. In terms of the Diaspora remittances, we are present in key areas in the continent.”

Access Bank has recently expanded to Southern Africa in a major acquisitions and takeovers of at least four banks, in what many described as an attempt by the bank to become the biggest bank in the continent.

On his part, Wigwe said the plan is to make Access Bank Africa’s gateway to the world.

Speaking on the awards, the Patron African Banker and Chair of the Awards Committee, Omar Ben Yedder said: “Wigwe is one of the most respected bankers on the continent, without a shadow of a doubt

He said the Access Bank chief executive has led the bank to become one of Africa’s leading financial services groups.

Yasser said “He has shown a relentless pursuit for growth, but has done so in a measured and calculated manner. What he and his team have done at Access Bank is nothing short of remarkable.”

The African Banker Awards is the most respected and recognised industry event celebrating African bankers who have distinguished themselves.

The organisers this year, said they placed emphasis on recognising and rewarding institutions that contributed to the real economy which has suffered from the impact of the COVID-19 as well as contributed to women empowerment on the continent.
