Oppo Unveils Air Glass, AI Smart Glasses

Oppo has this week unveiled its new augmented reality (AR) wearable in the form of the Oppo Air Glass which will be launching first in China early next year. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4100 processor the wearable device uses AR technology 2 display imagery.

This was unveiled when Oppo held another of its annual INNO Day events where it discloses a bunch of new technologies and concepts.

As usual, the company used the event to disclose new smart glasses, or at least, something that is part of this category. For the third year in a row, we have the Oppo Air Glass. It’s an Augmented Reality device that snaps onto specially-designed frames and uses a micro projector to overlay different kinds of information directly in front of your eyes. So you can make your regular glasses become smart glasses.

The Oppo Air Glass comes in White or Black colorways. It’s made of two parts – the frame, which houses the components. Under the hood, the AR device comes with Snapdragon Wear 4100 platform chipset and a lens. There is a monocular waveguide and a self-developed Spark Micro Projector that makes use of micro-LED technology. It projects information through the five elements of glass lenses.

The projector is among the most compact in the industry at just 0.5cc. The micro-LED technology allows the projector to reach high brightness levels despite its tiny size. Furthermore, Oppo’s Air Glass has a custom-made optical diffraction waveguide with two display modes. There is a 16-level greyscale and 256-level grayscale. It can deliver up to 1,400 nits in average brightness so that the information remains visible in indifferent lighting conditions.

The Air Glass has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4100 processor and weighs just 30g (about 1oz) in total. Oppo says it should last for 3 hours of active usage and 40 hours on standby. There are two frame designs, a silver half-frame and a black full-frame, and each is available in two sizes. The inside of the frame has a magnetic port that allows it to be attached to more conventional glasses.

The waveguide display uses a tiny projector with Micro LED tech capable of up to 3 million nits peak brightness, though Oppo says the actual brightness will be up to 1,400 nits in average conditions. It can be operated via touch, voice, hand tracking, and head tracking, as well as through a Smart Glass app on a smartphone running Oppo’s ColorOS 11 or above.

You can also control what’s overlaid through the Air Glass. The “wearable” supports touch, voice, hand motion, or head movements. Worth noting that hand motion requires an Oppo Watch 2 smartwatch. You can perform a nod or simply shake your head to open and close notifications. However, this may not be something comfortable for doing all the time. So it’s good to have a good range of command inputs.

Oppo Air Glass can show a variety of applications, like Weather, Calendar, Health, Navigation, or Teleprompter. It allows you to do a presentation practically anywhere. There is also a translation function built-in. It enables cross-cultural communication between two people wearing Air Glass. For instance, it supports Mandarin Chinese and English two-way translation. It will be available out of the box. Mandarin Chinese – Japanese will come at a later point.
