Buhari Commissions Tier IV Data Centre in Kano

President Muhammed Buhari has on Monday commissioned the 41-terabyte national tier-4 Data Center in Kano, the project was executed by Galaxy Backbone Limited.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Prof. Ali Isa Pantami said the data centre was the first of its kind in northern Nigeria and the best so far in the country.

“The reliability of data collection of the facility is 99.99% so it is almost a hundred per cent reliable,” he said.

Prof. Pantami further vowed that the centre would improve the digital economy, provide job opportunities and enhance cybersecurity while supporting the country to consolidate the gains of the digital economy.

The data centre, which Pantami described as a technology-upgraded facility, is, according to him, built to provide more storage facilities for both public and private sectors across the country, with its 41 terabytes of memory capacity and 2.2-petabyte storage capacity.

“Government has its main data centre in Abuja, another one in the South, which is a backup, and this is another one in the North West.

“That of Abuja and the South were established some years ago. But this centre here is higher because it is a Tier IV data centre. The one we have in Abuja is a Tier III data centre. So, this is an upgrade of the existing data centres we have in the country in both private and public sectors. It is world-class,” Pantami disclosed.

Pantami said the President has directed his Ministry to complete the Project as part of the National Information and Communication Technology Infrastructure Backbone (NIPTIP 2).

According to him NIPTIP 2 covers Nothern Nigeria and some Southern part of the country.The Minister further said the North West Tier IV Data Centre is the first ever in the entire world with 99.999 percent reliability.

Also speaking Managing Director of the Galaxy Backbone Limited Muhammad Bello Abubakar said the Kano Data Centre will contribute in the grow of the Nation GDP.

He said the Centre will bring more achievements and provide enabling environment for doing business.

He commended President Buhari and Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Professor Isa Pantami for his foresight and innovation towards ensuring Nigeria maintained its tempo in Digital space world wide.

While at Kano government house Buhari described ongoing infrastructure development across the country as ‘fantastic’, urging citizens to appreciate what they have as the situation in the country is not dire when compared with other countries.

‘‘We have a great country but we do not appreciate it until we visit our neighbors and other countries where the preoccupation is for people to have one good meal a day”, the President said.
